Traffic Zone Gallery presents Happenstance: A Collection of Street Photographs, a thoughtful selection of Martha Gabriela Driessen’s black and white photography. It is a collection of photographs from her walks of the past two years as she flowed through the streets of cities around the world carefully arranging the simplicity and happenstance of everyday life. In Happenstance Martha’s photographs feature spontaneous and candid visual moments that she came upon as she walked down a street, while at a bus stop, or at a park. Her photographs pointedly highlight the beauty of ordinary life. Happenstance shows life unraveling, an unveiling of the human spirit.

As a street photographer I search for the simplicity and happenstance in everyday life. I search for spontaneous visual moments that reveal the human spirit. My intent is not to give permanency to the ephemeral but to provide a space for the ordinary, for the conventional, since it is precisely those moments that collectively make life something extraordinary.
Martha Gabriela Driessen is a self-taught street photographer working primarily in black and white. Martha was first exposed to traditional photography and the darkroom in her native Mexico. She continued exploring photography in Minnesota where she was introduced to the practice of street photography. Today Martha travels the world photographing everyday life, often under the mentorship of Magnum photographer, Nikos Economopoulos. She currently shares a studio in the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art and is an active member in F-Stop Group, led by Tom Arndt and Sally Mars, at the Minneapolis Photo Center. Martha has participated in numerous juried shows and her work is in private collections in the USA, Mexico, and Argentina. In 2014 she published Havana, December 2013, a catalogue of her work from Havana, Cuba.
